About This Project

Holy Comforter Catholic Church

This project renovated the entirety of the historic church sanctuary. The existing altar, tabernacle and celebrant’s chairs were returned to a more traditional layout. The existing stone altar and ambo were removed, restored and reconstructed in their traditional location.

A new high altar, drawing on the details of the original altar was fabricated by Rugo Stone of Virginia. The columns and mensa are made of red and pink marble.  Panels of book-matched stone and featured small tile details. The entire floor was replaced with honed Tennessee marble.

This layout creates a reinforcement of the importance of the altar, the tabernacle and the Eucharist by placing them on direct axis of this traditional church. The entirety of the architecture thus focuses the eye on the altar and tabernacle.
